What is Bluetooth?

Bluetooth technology defines a two-way, short-range radio link that enables communication between computers, mobile phones, PDAs, and other computing, electronic and home theater devices. With Bluetooth, you can easily synchronize your PDA and laptop contacts or calendar data, talk on the speakerphone, or print. It's a cable replacement technology like infrared, but has many advantages over infrared.

The Bluetooth specification focuses on keeping costs low, minimizing power consumption, and small size. Low power consumption means that it can be used in battery powered devices. Bluetooth offers faster data transfer rates and higher transmission distances compared to infrared and there are no on-site restrictions. Works on the 2.4 GHz radio frequency that works worldwide.


The name of Bluetooth was named after a 10th century Danish king Harald Blatand (Harld Bluetooth) who was known for uniting today's battle groups in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Originally developed by Ericsson, it is currently managed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).

Bluetooth SIG is an industry group comprising the telecom, computing and chip industries. Today it is a member of more than 2000 companies. Bluetooth SIG monitors the rating program to ensure compliance with the standard and collaboration with other Bluetooth devices. Any device with the Bluetooth logo has successfully completed interoperability.


Speed: Bluetooth supports a gross data rate of 1 Mbps. The actual data rate is 432 kbps for full duplex and 721 kbps for asymmetric transmission.

Frequency: Bluetooth uses the unauthorized ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical) band at 2.4 GHz. In most countries, this band is available. It is reserved for military use in some countries, but even these countries are moving to make the band universally usable. Since Bluetooth uses the same frequency range as 802.11b WLAN products, these two technologies cannot work in the same space under certain conditions.

Security: Bluetooth is as secure as cord using authentication and 128-bit encryption. Applications can also create their own security at the top of the Bluetooth connection

Transmission distance: The typical range of Bluetooth is up to 10 m. The range depends on the radio performance class used. Typical range for Class 2 radio is 10 m. More efficient classes support longer ranges and have higher output performance. Most devices use Class 2 radio and mobile devices, such as mobile phones, where low power consumption is crucial, using only a Class 2 radio.

Architecture: Up to 8 devices can be connected simultaneously via Bluetooth. Piconet is a collection of Bluetooth devices that are connected ad hoc. All devices are peer units, but a device works as a master and other slaves during the piconet connection. Each piconet supports up to 3 full duplex audio devices. Up to 10 pixels within a 10 m area.


Bluetooth is the preferred wireless technology of WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network).
