I noticed two stories on an internet radio commercial that caught my eye this week. One of them was the Rock station of the Boston Legacy, WBCN became an Internet radio station in August. Since 1968, the WBCN has been the Boston Rock Station and has paved the way for all sports formats.
According to the AM or FM broadcaster, another worrying story is that industry analyst Mark Ramsey advises AM and FM stations to NOT MUSIC FORMATS as the music is gradually disappearing from AM and FM radio stations .
He argues that Internet radio is setting up "terrestrial disadvantages" on terrestrial broadcasters and urges them to look for forms elsewhere in the future.
While I see where it comes from and agreeing to a point, I can not see that AM and FM broadcasters will soon be resigned from the music. Although they can not compete with the strictly targeted niche music formats that are growing on the internet, there is always room for local content and that LOCALISM is likely to be a saving grace.
What these stories are right about, the audio entertainment industry is changing and no one knows exactly where to go. One thing is certain, however, that Internet radio has an impact on traditional radio broadcasters and will have even greater impact over time.
I think this also points out that broadcasters generally do not know how to integrate broadcasting and online efforts into any coherent or productive partnership. In essence, radio stations accepted and directed the attitude that if something was important, that would be at their station. Of course, the conclusion was that it was not important at competing radio stations or elsewhere.
The trouble is that this has become a self-fulfilling prophecy that prevents the site's site from being relevant.
