Anyone who has ever worked as a police officer or correctional officer knows the following: Brawn or the brain that will be during the day. They also know that you should use both (occasionally) if you succeed in your work.
We know that most of the time in the correctional industry is physical confrontation and not always. the result of our actions. Now I understand that some people disagree with this, but it is a difficult reality. Where do we go wrong, which leads to this kind of confrontation? Communication
We can only communicate with people in two ways: verbal and non-verbal. Most of our communication (about 85-87%) is through body language. We can all say that someone is anxious, happy, crazy, angry, indifferent, gets the point. When our body says it is one thing and our mouth says that we are different, we tend to have problems. We do not regularly have the luxury of firearms, laptops or other types of intermediate weapons inside the correctional facility. If so, trust me when I tell you that the others are very jealous! What do the others leave?
True, some people have lost all their important connections between their brains and their mouths (also called verbal diarrhea), but most of the others are still intact. As an instructor I always ask the same question from my classes: "What is the difference between a correctional officer and a crime?" As expected, the answers are varied: "We'll go home at the end of the day!" – We won't kill anyone! "No one was ripped off" and the list goes on. Then I pause again and ask again.
At this point he looks at me when he looks at their face in confusion. I say to them, “Although you are right not to offend anyone, and to come home at the end of the day, the only difference between them and us is that they were caught and we didn't. "Then I'll continue to ask," Who in the class never did anything in their lifetime that no one is currently doing in a local, county, state, or federal correction facility? "
Remember, I said," Never, they've done nothing in their lives … "We all have. Whether you stole something like a child or an adult (office equipment for anyone?), it's still confusing." When you got home with your friends, he said, "I shouldn't have gone home!" the "humming driving drunk driving" slogan.)
Now that we have established just as much as we do, create another important fact: Not everyone who is imprisoned has filled it all, the rest of their lives behind the grid
Correction departments across the country have moved their old business trip to modern times: rehabilitation and reintegration. we will probably see a common theme: public security, socio-social behavior, reintegration and rehabilitation.
To be able to reintegrate effectively and rehabilitate, we have to do one thing: Communication. Communication in a correctional facility can be divided into four main categories:
1. No communication
2. Operating Communication
3. Human respectable communication
4. Cognitive Reflective Communication
Quite Easy: Not Talking, Talking, Pointing, Doing as Saying, and We are Happy.
We say the least is to do the job and maintain control ("Come here!" There! "" Chow time "" Do it! "" Don't do it! " etc. etc.) Despite the fact that there is still separation between officers and perpetrators, there are more interactions than in the absence of communication, anyone else who meets in public. Using "please" and "thank you" for the offender would offend many correctional officers, being part of a rational and effective communication with a correctional facility. (For more details see the announcement in the second part of today's corrections.)
Cognitive Reflective Communication
This is the most difficult form of communication that includes the willingness of a person to think and change behavior, thinking process, and accept the consequences of their actions. And what do most of us most hate? Change! And this is the reason why the most difficult form of communication / thought is
After learning how to communicate effectively, we can reduce the problems we face every day and increase our security factor "exponentially. The evidence is in the pudding …
